Huangshi Youtang, located in Jinshui Village, Jincheng Township, Kinmen County, is the only private school building with a garden pond in the area. This building was built in 1766 by Jun Huang, the "shipping king" of Kinmen at that time.[1] It is now listed on the List of national monuments of Taiwan.
History
[edit]Jun Huang, born in the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, returned to his hometown to purchase properties because of his business fortune and established a private school in the 30th year of Qianlong's reign during the Qing Dynasty (1765). Since this building was constructed in the year of Yiyou, it is called Youtang Outbuilding. There is a banner titled "Youtang" in front of the gate. The building was declared a Grade II historic site on November 11, 1988, and upgraded to a national historic site in 2000.[2]
Building
[edit]The former Shuitou Huangshi Youtang Outbuilding comprises two parts, the gatehouse, and the house, covering an area of about 476 pings. The house has two entrances, surrounded by earthen walls on the front and right sides. The front room is the classroom, divided into a hall and left and right-wing rooms. A pavilion is in front of the hall, and the back room is the teacher's residence. There is a pond in front of the house. The pond is oval and is surrounded by stones. A curved granite bridge divides the pond into two parts. The round one is the Sun Pond, and the stringy one is the Moon Pond. Together, they are called the "Sun and Moon Pond."[3]
