The Hotel Fundador (Founder Hotel), is a 17 story high 3-star rated hotel in Guimarães and it’s the tallest building in the city.
History

[edit]Known in its early days as Hotel Fundador D.Pedro, its construction was promoted by José Maria de Oliveira Machado Vaz and Alberto Pimenta Machado Jr; partners at the A.Pimenta, Lda firm.[1]
The place chosen for the construction on the hotel was the corner of D. Afonso Henriques Avenue and Eduardo Manuel de Almeida street.[1] In the preliminary draft presented to the câmara municipal by architects Sérgio Fernandez and Pedro Ramalho[2] on 11 November 1969, the proposal was to build a 15-storey tower: one floor for exhibitions and stores/offices; one floor entirely for offices; one for the porter's quarters; six floors for hotel rooms, with a total of 16 dwellings; two floors for a guesthouse with 14 rooms; a restaurant with capacity for 100 people, which would occupy the top two floors and two basement floors for fabric warehouses belonging to the firm A. Pimenta, Lda., the promoter of the construction.[1]
In 6 April 1970, two more small floors were added to the plant, one for the hydro-pneumatic plant on the second floor and one on the roof for the engine room, giving a total of 14,448 m2 of floor space for the 17 floors as a whole, according to the council's measurements.[1]
Construction and aftermath
[edit]Although the building permit was issued on 18 August 1971, it was only completed in 1977[2] and inaugurated on 26 September 1980, in the presence of the then Minister of Trade and Tourism, Basílio Horta, and the city's Mayor, António Augusto Duarte Xavier.[1]
