Production

[edit]

It was revealed in January 2022 that Michael Mann had written a novelized sequel to his 1995 film with author Meg Gardiner, and that it would see a release in August of that year.[1] In a July interview, Mann revealed he intended to turn the novel into a film.[2]

In April 2023, it was announced Warner Bros. Pictures had formally begun negotiations to develop the sequel, with Mann directing and Adam Driver in talks to portray the character of Neil McCauley, played by Robert De Niro in the first film, as a young man.[3] Austin Butler and Ana de Armas has also bee reported to be in the mix to star in the film at that time, with Jeremy Allen White and Channing Tatum also reportedly expressing interest.[4] Mann would confirm in an August interview he had discussed the role of McCauley with Driver.[5] Mann would confirm in October that Heat 2 was to be his next film.[6] By March 2024, he was in "deep pre-production", with filming intended to begin in the summer.[7][8]

Filming

[edit]

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in October or November 2024.[9] Mann would reaffirm this aim, though also suggested an early 2025 production start was possible.[10]
