Handhaving is a special type of enforcement unit only within the kingdom of the Netherlands, though officers of Handhaving are referred to as BOA (or Buitengewoon opsporingsambtenaar) meaning "special enforcement officer". The word Handhaving directly translates to "enforcement". BOA's are usually employed by a municipality or the government. Though, they can also work for companies and nonprofits if that organization has a license from the Ministry of Justice and Security. All BOA's are required to have training and a certification from justis (the Dutch screening authority)
