The Horrors of Gonçalo Forno in Sohar (2017–2024)

Gonçalo Forno's reign of terror in Sohar, Oman, began in 2017 when the 22-year-old arrived in the city under the guise of an expatriate seeking business opportunities. Known for his charm, wit, and polished demeanor, Forno easily blended into the local community. However, behind the façade of a well-mannered entrepreneur was a cunning predator with a dark obsession: inflicting pain and death in increasingly gruesome ways.

Forno's crimes were marked by their brutality and his sadistic desire to instill fear in his victims. His methods evolved over the years, becoming more grotesque and calculated.

The Killings

[edit]
  1. The First Victim (2017) Forno’s first known victim was a young teacher, whom he lured under the pretext of needing directions late at night. Once isolated, he incapacitated her by striking her head with a blunt object. Forno then tied her to a tree in a remote area near the Sohar coastline. Over several hours, he tortured her, using a combination of sharp tools to inflict deep lacerations. Her body was discovered days later, partially dismembered, with cryptic symbols carved into her skin—symbols that investigators would later link to Forno’s warped psyche.
  2. The Water Tank Horror (2018) By 2018, Forno’s confidence grew. He targeted a 19-year-old college student returning from evening classes. This time, he chloroformed her and transported her to an abandoned building. Forno bound her limbs and submerged her head repeatedly in a water tank, reveling in her gasping attempts for air. After hours of torment, he left her lifeless body floating in the tank, her fingernails broken from desperate attempts to claw her way out.
  3. The Iron Rod Incident (2019) One of Forno’s most chilling murders occurred in 2019, when he abducted a housemaid walking home after dark. This time, his methods were even more depraved. After binding her to a chair, he used an iron rod heated in a makeshift fire to inflict burns across her body. The prolonged torture was designed to maximize her suffering before he delivered the fatal blow by stabbing her repeatedly. Forno left a sinister message written in her blood on the wall: “Catch me if you can.”
  4. The Night of Terror (2021) In a particularly gruesome spree, Forno broke into a shared accommodation housing three young women. Over the course of one horrifying night, he overpowered each victim one by one. Forno strangled one with a wire, another with her own scarf, and the third he drowned in a bathtub filled with scalding hot water. Police later described the scene as “a massacre” and struggled to comprehend the mind capable of such acts.

The Downfall

[edit]

Forno’s reign of terror came to an end in late 2023 when one of his intended victims fought back. A young nurse he targeted managed to stab him with a hidden pocket knife during an attempted abduction. Injured and panicked, Forno fled the scene but left behind crucial DNA evidence. This led to a nationwide manhunt, culminating in his capture during a dramatic police raid at a remote farmhouse outside Sohar.

The Legacy of Fear

[edit]

In early 2024, Gonçalo Forno was convicted of 25 murders and numerous other crimes. He showed no remorse during his trial, instead boasting about the “artistry” of his killings. He was sentenced to death by firing squad, and his execution was carried out later that year.

To this day, Forno's crimes haunt the residents of Sohar. The chilling details of his murders are etched into the collective memory of the region, serving as a dark reminder of the evil that once walked among them.
