Giuseppe Calleja was both an artist and a historian. The son of Antonio Calleja and Maria Teresa née Cachia, Giuseppe Maria was born in Valletta on 12 December 1828.^[1]

His masterpiece is regarded as the Annunciation altarpiece at the Balzan parish church. He executed many other paintings for various churches and participated in several exhibitions in Malta and London.^[2]

Calleja studied under Giuseppe Hyzler and followed the Nazarene tradition till the turn of the 20th century. Calleja is considered to be a good portrait artist and also meticulous, thorough, and quite accurate. Calleja regularly contributed pencil drawings to L’Arte and published several studies about art treasures in local churches of Malta in L’Ordine. He eventually published them as a book in 1881, translated by Daniel Fallon into English.^[3]

Giuseppe Calleja never married and died at his residence in St. Julians on the 12th of August 1915 and laid to rest in the Addolorata Cemetery.^[4]^[5]
