- Comment: I think the sources are probably enough to demonstrate notability, but the article could use some more information about the awards themselves rather than just the list of winners before it can be approved. Turnagra (talk) 00:00, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- Comment: Need independent sources to establish why subject is notable. Also external links should never be in the body. Slywriter (talk) 02:45, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year (EWPY) is a prestigious annual competition organized by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Tierfotografen (GDT), or Society of German Nature Photographers. Established in 2001, the award aims to celebrate exceptional wildlife photography, promote awareness of nature conservation, and highlight the artistic and technical skill of nature photographers from across Europe.[1][2][3]
The competition is widely recognized as one of the most significant wildlife photography contests in Europe.[4] It garners participation from both professional and amateur photographers. The primary focus remains on European participants and ecosystems. The competition's high standards, strict judging criteria, and emphasis on ethical photography practices have contributed to its prominence. Additionally, the winning and commended photographs are featured in exhibitions and publications, further amplifying their impact on environmental awareness.[5][6]
The award has gained further notability due to its consistent emphasis on conservation and biodiversity. By showcasing striking and thought-provoking images of wildlife and natural landscapes, the competition contributes to global conversations about environmental issues, such as habitat destruction, climate change, and species extinction.[7][8][9]
The first competition was held in 2001 and is open for photographers residing in Europe and also for GDT members.[10][11] In 2024 over 18,000 images from 38 different countries were submitted to the competition.[12][13]
The winners are presented at the International Nature Photography Festival in Lünen every year.[14]
Ethical Standards
[edit]A notable feature of the competition is its adherence to strict ethical guidelines.[15] Photographers are required to submit evidence verifying that their images were captured without causing harm or distress to the animals or their habitats. The use of staged or manipulated scenes is strictly prohibited, ensuring the authenticity of submissions.
Exhibition and Cultural Impact
[edit]The winning and commended photographs are part of an annual exhibition that tours internationally, drawing thousands of visitors and raising awareness of the beauty and fragility of the natural world.[16] The images are also featured in an annual publication, providing further reach and influence.
The European Wildlife Photographer of the Year serves as an important platform for advocating biodiversity and conservation through visual storytelling, making it a noteworthy and influential event in both the photography and environmental communities.
