G.URL Magazine is a gaming and online culture biannual magazine established in 2023. The magazine covers femininity within gaming and online culture, extending beyond games into fashion, music, and lifestyle.[1]

The magazine has been notable for celebrating diversity within gaming[2], featuring diverse members of the community include TheBabeGabe of Blackstarkids and Greg Kythreotis of the studio Shedworks, the studio behind hit game Sable.

Based in London, its creative director and founder is Jenny O'Connor.[1]

Background

[edit]

G.URL Magazine was launched in 2022 by Jenny O'Connor as part of her final major project at the University for the Creative Arts. The magazine was initially aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of female gamers in the gaming community. O'Connor's project quickly evolved into a full-fledged publication, driven by a passion to reshape societal perceptions of "gamer girls" in both gaming and online communities.[3][4]

The idea for G.URL Magazine stemmed from O'Connor's own experiences as a female gamer[3] and her observations of the broader gaming culture. She noticed a significant gap in media representation and aimed to create a platform that not only celebrated women in gaming but also explored the connections between gaming, fashion, music, and lifestyle.[5]

The magazine's early success can be attributed to its innovative content and the growing demand for diverse perspectives in gaming media. O'Connor managed the project single-handedly, balancing content creation, editorial duties, and social media engagement.[1] Her dedication and unique vision quickly attracted a loyal readership and significant social media following, particularly on platforms like TikTok[6] and Instagram.[7]

The G.URLS

[edit]

The G.URLs are a trio of virtual characters that have become iconic figures in G.URL Magazine, representing diverse aspects of gamer girl culture. These characters—Star G.URL, Music G.URL, and Space G.URL—are featured throughout all editions of the magazine, embodying the multifaceted identities of female gamers.[8]

Star G.URL symbolizes the vibrant and enthusiastic gamer, often portrayed with a whimsical and colorful aesthetic that captures the playful side of gaming.

Music G.URL merges the worlds of gaming and music, reflecting the crossover appeal of these two popular cultures. She is depicted with elements that highlight her passion for both gaming and musical creativity.

Space G.URL represents the adventurous and imaginative spirit of gamers who are fascinated by sci-fi and futuristic themes.

Together, the G.URLs encapsulate the varied interests and identities within the gamer girl community, providing readers with relatable and aspirational figures that celebrate their love for gaming and beyond.
