"Fushigi" (不思議, lit. 'Miracle') is a song by Japanese singer-songwriter and musician Gen Hoshino.
Background and release
[edit]Gen Hoshino's early career consisted of acoustic-centered records. From his third album Stranger (2013), he began to incorporate greater use of synthesizers and string arrangements,[1] but continued to compose songs with the guitar.[2] Around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Hoshino sought to upgrade his composition style. He found time in quarantine to practice using digital audio workstations (DAW) and keyboard,[3] aided by drummer and producer Mabanua, who gave Hoshino a lecture on digital music composition over a phone call.[4] This resulted in the singles "Halfway" (2020) and "Create" (2021),[3][5] the latter co-arranged by Mabanua.[6]
On March 30, 2021, it was announced that Hoshino would perform the theme song to the television drama series Why I Dress Up for Love .[7] Further details about the song were withheld until the show's premiere, when its title—"Fushigi"—was revealed alongside a slated release date.[8] Hoshino first heard about the show from director Ayuko Tsukahara while starring on MIU404 , where he also acquainted with producer Junko Arai . Later, when invited to write its theme song, Hoshino joined the staff at a briefing. Arai told him to create a "very touching love song" and continued, "This Thursday will be kyun (lit. 'a heartthrob')".[7][9] Hoshino both wrote and produced "Fushigi", and he co-arranged it with Mabanua.[10] Like how "Create" explored the meaning of creation to Hoshino, "Fushigi" is his interpretation of love. He chose fushigi (lit. 'miracle', 'strange', or 'mysterious') as the title due to the strange nature of love, according to Hoshino.[9]
"Fushigi" was released by Speedstar Records as a digital single on April 27, 2021.
