František Macek (born 21 June 1981 in Zlín) is a Czech conductor. He is the Artistic Director of the Music in the Gardens and Chateau Kroměříž festival and the Chief Conductor of the Slovak Sinfonietta.[1]

Education

František Macek comes from a musical family. His four siblings are all musicians, and his father, also named František Macek, was an organist, composer, and conductor.

Macek graduated in organ performance from the P. J. Vejvanovský Conservatory in Kroměříž and studied choral conducting and early music at the Týn School - Collegium Marianum in Prague. He continued his studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, where he studied conducting under B. Tommy Andersson.[2] He completed his studies in 2017 with a graduation concert with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. He also refined his conducting skills through masterclasses with Bernard Haitink, David Zinman, Daniel Gatti, and Manfred Honeck, and attended the prestigious American Academy of Conducting in Aspen and the Academy of the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Switzerland.[2]

In 2018, he gained recognition in the professional conducting world by winning the competition for Assistant Conductor position[3] of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR), which boasts one of the finest modern concert halls in Europe.

Career

In 2020, František Macek became the artistic director of the international music festival Music in the Gardens and Chateau Kroměříž (Czech Republic), dedicated to performances of classical music in the UNESCO World Heritage site in Kroměříž[4]. In the spring of 2021, Macek successfully debuted [5]at the prestigious Prague Spring Festival with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra[6] and frequently collaborates with other Czech orchestras, including the Prague Symphony Orchestra, PKF – Prague Philharmonia, Brno Philharmonic, Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, Moravian Philharmonic, Pilsen Philharmonic, Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic, and the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra.

František Macek has successfully established himself on the international stage. Recently, he has conducted ensembles such as the Orquesta de Valencia, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier, Wiener Concert-Verein, Sinfonietta Cracovia, Silesian Philharmonic, Kraków Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, and others. He has also had the honor of conducting the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Moscow Philharmonic, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Festival Strings Lucerne, Gstaad Festival Orchestra, Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, NorrlandsOperan Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, and Netherlands Symphony Orchestra.[2]

Starting in the 2023-2024 season, he has been the Chief Conductor of the Slovak Sinfonietta, with whom he launched the orchestra's 50th season.[7]
