Franciscus 'Frans' Verstraten (Langenboom, The Netherlands) is a Dutch Experimental Psychologist at the University of Sydney.
Life and Career
[edit]Verstraten studied Experimental Psychology at the Radboud University in Nijmegen and received a PhD from Utrecht University in 1994. He had post-doctoral positions at McGill University, Harvard University and at the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) near Kyoto in Japan. In 1997 he received a 3-year research fellowship from the Netherlands Academy of Arts & Sciences (KNAW). In 1999, while spending a year at the University of Toronto, he was appointed Chair and Professor in Cognitive and Theoretical Psychology at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He served as Head of Department from 2001 until 2010 and was the Scientific Director of the Helmholtz Institute until 2012.
In 2012 Verstraten moved to the University of Sydney, where he holds the McCaughey Chair of Psychology. He was the Head of School of Psychology from January 2013 for 10 years.
Scientific Contributions
[edit]Verstraten's interest is the human visual system, in particular the perception of movement. He has a special interest in how the visual system adapts to (fast) changing environmental conditions. With his graduate students he also explored aspects of binocular vision, the role of attention on visual processing, time perception, motor-adaptation, the role of gestures, search & eye-movements, and recently the role of new technology, in particular virtual reality, for mental health related assessments. Verstraten has successfully supervised 20 PhD students.
