[edit]On October 27, 2024, Hinchcliffe performed at a trump rally that took place in Madison Square Garden. During his set, he said "There’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you know this but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico."[1]
Response
[edit]The remarks were widely criticized and considered to be racist. Prominent politicians such as Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, who called Hinchcliffe a "jackwad".[2][3]
Commentators also considered the joke to be a potential October surprise as they suggest the vote of Puerto Ricans living in swing states, particularly in Pennsylvania.[4][5][6][7]
