Draft:Flemish Institute for Technological Research

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Flemish Institute for Technological Research, better known as VITO, is a Flemish independent research organisation based in Mol.

The research activities focus on three areas that have an impact on Flanders, Europe, and the world: a regenerative economy, a healthy living environment, and resilient ecosystems. To achieve this, the staff collaborate in multidisciplinary teams across more than 40 research domains.

Organisation

[edit]

VITO is a public limited company established under the decree of 23 January 1991[1]. This decree was replaced by the decree of 30 April 2009[2]. VITO is part of the WEWIS department of the Flemish government.

VITO operates partly with its own resources (contract research, patents) and partly with subsidies from the Flemish government, which is why government commissioners from the WEWIS department are also part of the Board of Directors.

Civil engineer Dirk Fransaer was managing director from 2001 until 2023[3]. Inge Neven[4] is now the CEO[5][6].

In addition to its headquarters in Mol, VITO has offices in Flanders in Berchem, Genk, Oostende, Ghent, and Kortrijk. Its international branches are located in Qatar, Beijing, and Dubai. VITO is active in 40 countries, employing around 1,300 staff members.

Collaborations

[edit]
  • VITO collaborates with governments, organisations, and companies, both at the Flemish and international levels.
  • EnergyVille is a collaboration between the Belgian research partners KU Leuven, VITO, imec, and UHasselt, focused on research into sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems. Hundreds of researchers work on this initiative, with a large facility located in the Thorpark.
