Lyrics and music
[edit]The song's imagery is about George Harrison's vision of life, although he is aware of the god, he is calling for reassurance.[1][2] The song's lyrics also talk about the metaphor 'fish out of water'.[3]
Reception
[edit]Author Elliot J. Huntley said the song sounded "very contemporary in terms of it's glossy production values"[4] Rolling Stone magazine author Jason Fine stated the song was "mining the pop vein that yielded many of his catchiest songs of the 70s."[5] Author Alan Clayson stated that it had "rapid-fire verses".[6] American Songwriter stated that "Wreck of the Hesperus," "Fish on the Sand," and "Devil’s Radio" all "rocked with amiable good humor."[7]
Attempted performance
[edit]Harrison attempted a performance of the song alongside This is Love during his 1991 Tokyo Dome Stadium concert, but scrapped the performance in favor of other songs off the Cloud Nine album, such as the title track and Devil's Radio.[8]
