Redot (/ˈrɛdoʊ/ RED-oh) is a cross-platform, free, and open-source game engine released under the permissive MIT license. Redot is a GitHub fork of Godot, created due to a controversy surrounding the Community Manager. The development environment runs on many platforms and can export to several more. It is designed to create both 2D and 3D games targeting PC, mobile, and web platforms, and can also be used to develop non-game software, including editors.

Controversies

[edit]

On September 27, 2024, the community manager of Godot, Nat, posted a tweet.[2] using the official Godot account, expressing the opinion that all game engines are “woke”. This statement sparked significant backlash from users, leading to a series of attacks directed at Nat. In response, Nat blocked several users on Twitter and hid numerous tweets.

Consequently, a fork named Redot was created, and many supporters of Godot withdrew their funding after being blocked by Nat on the official Godot account.

Fork History

[edit]

The Redot Game Engine was officially forked from Godot in September 2024, with the goal of building a community-focused platform for game development. Since its inception, Redot has rapidly grown in popularity, especially among indie developers and hobbyists, due to its open-source nature and emphasis on community involvement.

Logo Design and Community Engagement

[edit]

One of the first major milestones in Redot's development occurred in October 2024, when the Redot team initiated a community-driven logo design competition. On October 2, 2024, the team announced that the response from the community had been overwhelming, with a significant number of creative submissions for the logo design. The sheer volume of designs submitted exceeded the team's expectations, reflecting the excitement and enthusiasm from the community. This event symbolized the core values of Redot, highlighting the central role the community played in shaping the project's identity [3]

Expansion into Global Communities

[edit]

On October 5, 2024, the Redot team made another significant announcement concerning the expansion of their community. Redot established a dedicated moderation team for the Japanese section of their Discord community, demonstrating their commitment to supporting non-English-speaking users. This move aimed to foster greater engagement within the Japanese development community by providing a localized platform for discussion, resource sharing, and collaboration. The moderation team was set up to facilitate smoother communication and ensure that Japanese developers could actively participate in the Redot ecosystem.[4]
