Filiz Gencan Akin (born 1983 in Edirne province) is a Turkish lawyer and CHP politician. On March 31, 2024, she was elected as the new mayor of Edirne, succeeding Recep Gürkan, and was inaugurated on April 4.[1][2]
Life and work
[edit]Filiz Gencan attended Kurtuluş elementary school and the Anatolian secondary school Edirne Yıldırım Beyazıt. Throughout her secondary and high school education, she said she actively participated in debates and sports clubs.
In 2003, Filiz Gencan began studying law, which she completed in 2007 at the Marmara University Faculty of Law with a good grade. Parallel to her studies, she visited Berlin for 3 months in 2005 and continued her German language training at the Goethe Institute in Turkey.
After completing her legal clerkship in 2007, Filiz Gencan began working as a lawyer in Edirne in 2008 and worked as a mediator and lawyer until the mayoral election.
Filiz Gencan has been involved in politics as a member of the CHP since 2011. In 2011, she became a candidate for parliament for the city of Edirne in the 24th parliamentary elections of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. In the 2019 local elections, Filiz Gencan Akin became the first council member and municipal council member, and in the local elections on March 31, 2024, she was elected mayor of the city of Edirne.
Political and voluntary work
[edit]After being elected as a member of Edirne Municipal Council, Filiz Gencan was a member of Edirne Solid Waste Management Association for five years, deputy chairperson of Edirne Municipal Council and chairperson of Edirne City Transportation Commission. In addition to her duties as a member of parliament, Filiz Gencan Akin has maintained relations with numerous non-governmental organizations, particularly on the issue of women's rights. Gencan is a member of the Ataturkist Thought Association and was elected as a disciplinary board member in the last election of this association.
