The Eric Voegelin Library (Eric-Voegelin-Bibliothek) is the private collection of the political scientist and philosopher Eric Voegelin (1901–1985) and an intellectual history research center at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in Erlangen, Germany.

[edit]Eric Voegelin (born Erich Hermann Wilhelm Vögelin, German: [ˈføːgəliːn]; January 3, 1901 – January 19, 1985) was a German-American political philosopher. He is regarded as one of the most prominent contemporary representatives of a historically and hermeneutically oriented theory of politics from a comparative civilizational perspective. After years of academic work in Vienna, Voegelin, a former assistant to Hans Kelsen, emigrated to the United States in 1938, partly due to political reasons. In the U.S., he taught at various universities and published his most significant works, Order and History and The New Science of Politics. From 1958 to 1969, Voegelin returned to Europe to accept a position as a full professor of political science at the University of Munich. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1969, he worked at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace at Stanford University until his death in 1985.
Provenance
[edit]After Eric Voegelin's death, his widow, Lissy Voegelin, appointed the political scientist Jürgen Gebhardt as the custodian of her husband's private library. As a result, the entire collection was transferred from Stanford to Bavaria, specifically to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Since then, the Institute of Political Science at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg has housed and managed the Eric Voegelin Library, which also serves as a research center focused on intellectual history.
Collection
[edit]The extensively encyclopedic private library comprises approximately 5,000 books and offprints, with a particular emphasis on philosophy and religious studies. Additionally, the Voegelin Library holds, alongside Voegelin's published works, around 100 microfilms containing partially unpublished manuscripts and typescripts of the scholar, as well as his extensive correspondence with leading scholars of the time, particularly from the émigré community. These archived materials, which are still stored at Stanford, are accessible through an online catalog.

[edit]The Eric Voegelin Library is located at the Institute of Political Science at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, where it is scientifically and antiquarianly maintained. The collection is cataloged through a card catalog and an electronic database and is available to interested researchers for academic purposes.
