Eric Abraham Curry (May 15, 1993) is an activist, organizer, small business owner, author, and former political candidate from San Francisco, California. Curry ran to represent California’s 11th District in the United States House of Representatives in the 2022 election cycle.

Early Life and Education

Eric was born at St Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco, CA, the oldest son of Perry and Yanira (nee Medina) Curry. Eric grew up with his three younger siblings in San Francisco’s Outer Mission, or Excelsior District. Eric’s father is primarily Irish-Italian and his mother was born in El Salvador, moving to San Francisco when she turned eighteen. Eric’s family has been in San Francisco on his father’s side since 1865, when his great-great-great-great-grandfather Agostino Cuneo immigrated from Genoa, Italy.

Eric attended George Washington High School in San Francisco’s Richmond District. While a student he was a member of the General Service Society, French Club, and Latinos Unidos. During his sophomore year, Eric was briefly unhoused. While unhoused he was a recipient of services at Huckleberry House and Larkin Street Services before moving to Richmond, California, to live with his grandmother for the remainder of high school. The summer before his senior year, Eric was one of twenty finalists selected from a pool of a hundred fifty nominated to participate in the Science and Health Education Partnership’s Summer Internship Program at the University of California, San Francisco. Eric interned in Jeff Bluestone’s Lab in the Diabetes Center. His research involved treatment of the VEGF-2 receptor with receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

UCLA

Eric attended UCLA, participating in the Freshman Summer Program (FSP) by the Academic Advancement Program (AAP) the summer before his freshman year. While at UCLA, he was treasurer of the Guardian Scholars program and spoke at the Listening Tour hosted by the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth 2013(?). He was also active in the Pre-Veterinary Society and the Afrikan Student Union (ASU). Eric found it incredibly difficult to juggle his course load at UCLA and three jobs, eventually dropping out following a series of incidents related to his being the first person in his family to attend college and feeling inadequately supported.

Eric Curry’s Pets

While out of school, Eric began watching dogs out of his apartment in Los Angeles. Six and a half years later, he served his 1,000th unique client and in January of 2021 he sold his client list for Eric Curry’s Pets. In May 2014 Eric was the youngest finalist chosen to participate in the Falling Walls entrepreneurial competition. His pitch was titled Breaking the Wall of Education for First Generation College Students.

UCSB

In August of 2014 Eric enrolled at the University of California, Santa Barbara. While at UCSB, Eric was a Peer Advisor for their Guardian Scholars program. In June 2016 Eric graduated with his bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Eric remained in southern California until January 2019 when he moved back to the Bay Area to accept a tutoring position at a local community college.

Political Career

On March 31, 2023, Eric filed to run for Congress in California’s 11th District (formerly CA-12). His congressional campaign focused on issues such as Medicare for All, affordable housing, the Civilian Climate Corps outlined under the Green New Deal, and global nuclear disarmament. Eric’s campaign was featured in Healing Us, a documentary about the US healthcare system. In February of 2022 Eric suspended his campaign.

The Native Experience

In May of 2021, Eric started The Native Experience, a walking tour company; he has personally led more than five hundred tours around San Francisco as of July 2024.

Books

On July 11, 2020 Eric published his first book, A Real San Francisco Story. With Pets. a memoir told through his six identities as animal lover, student, entrepreneur, person of mixed race, gay person and native San Franciscan. Emilio’s First Pride, an LGBTQ+ children’s book about Eric’s childhood in San Francisco, is set to be released in the fall of 2024.

Personal Life

Eric was named Abraham Fernando Curry but legally changed his name to Eric Abraham Curry in August 2012. An avid animal lover, he has been a pescatarian since he was nine years old. Eric originally planned to attend veterinary school and has worked directly under multiple veterinarians in a variety of capacities at three different hospitals and a spay-neuter clinic. Eric identifies as gay.
