Elie Bassil (born 6 April 1982) is a Lebanese journalist and media personality known primarily for his reporting on celebrities.
Career
[edit]He began his career as a commercial model and later became a dancer with the Caracalla Dance Theatre.[1] He graduated from the Lebanese University with a degree in Journalism and Media. In the late 1990s, he started working with entertainment magazines, including Al Jaras, and is considered a pioneer of modern classical journalism.[2]
Bassil worked as a program producer for channels such as MBC, Alrai TV in Kuwait, Qatar TV, Mazzika, and Rotana Khalijia. He also covered events during the Yemeni war for Al-Hadath.[3] Feeling persecuted by the entertainment industry for his boldness in revealing truths, he turned to social media as a new platform after being boycotted by MBC.
In April 2019, during an interview with journalist Nishan on Al-Jadeed TV, Bassil described himself as "shameless" for breaking taboos in his discussions.[4]
Television hosting
[edit]In 2016, Bassil co-hosted The Gossip Show with Elenore Zgheib on OTV. The program was the first to introduce gossip-focused content on Lebanese TV.[5][6] The show received criticism for its bold topics and controversial style.
In 2019, he hosted Show Time and Adrenaline on Middle East Radio in Canada (Montreal).[7]
Acting
[edit]In 2009, Bassil made a guest appearance in the film El-Bayeh Romancy (البيه رومانسي), starring Hassan Hosny and Lebleba, produced by Mohamed El Sobky and directed by Ahmed El Badry. His role was considered daring, as he portrayed a homosexual character.[8]
Personal life
[edit]Bassil was born to a Lebanese father and an Algerian mother.[1]
In 2011, Elie Bassil's mobile phone, containing private videos with various public figures, was stolen. He implied that individuals connected to the son of a prominent politician were behind the theft, aiming to obtain a video with an emerging artist. He warned them that the video would be released in two weeks if they acted wrongly, and retaliated if they leaked the phone's content.[9]
In January 2018, an unidentified individual threatened to behead Bassil in a YouTube video, stating he would do so upon encountering him. Prior to this, Bassil had been stabbed, his dog was killed, and his cat was stolen. He had also faced multiple threats to his family, acid attacks on his car, and other assaults, yet continued his work, taking legal action against his aggressors.[10]
Bassil has received threats from the Islamic State due to his statements and suffered significantly as a result. He refused to criticize religious figures and symbols, leading him to avoid visiting Lebanon.[11]
