Diesel Loco Shed, Pune[1] is a motive power depot performing locomotive maintenance and repair facility for diesel locomotives of the Indian Railways, under its Pune division of the Central Railway, located in Pune in Maharashtra, India. It is one of the six locomotive sheds of the Central Railway, the others being at Kalyan (KYN), Kurla (CLA) Kalyan Electric Loco Shed, Bhusawal and Ajni. It is the only shed of Central Railway which holds both diesel as well as elctric locomotive. As of July 2023, there are 157 diesel and 50 electric locomotives in the shed.[2]
History
[edit]Diesel loco shed, Pune was inaugurated on 13 August 1981, the then Minister of Railways, Shri Kamalapati Tripathi. It was planned under WP 1978–79 to home 60 locos.[1] The shed was further extended to home 100 locos under WP 1981–82. Now it holds 157 diesel and 50 electrical locomotives of which 25 locos are operational with mail express links.
It started housing WAG-9 locomotives since September 2022 and WAP-7 since March 2023.
Infrastructure
[edit]The shed is located near Ghorpuri railway station and entrance of the shed is between a railway crossing gate. The total area covered by the Shed is 59,825 sq m and the covered area is 11,386 sq m. The total berthing capacity of the Shed is 22 Locos.
Operations
[edit]The shed is headed by Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Diesel), Pune, who is assisted by one Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Diesel), two Assistant Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Diesel), Assistant Material Manager (Diesel) and an Assistant Chemist & Metallurgist (Diesel) in day to day working and administration of shed. It has about 850 employees in different ranks in the day-to-day operations of the shed, which include periodical overhaul, maintenance and repair works. The locos of this shed were thoroughly traverses over entire Maharashtra for passenger and freight services.
Being one of the three diesel engine sheds in Central Railway, various major and minor maintenance schedules of diesel and electrical locomotives are carried out here. The shed is ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 certified. The shed is divided into Light Schedule Repair Section, Heavy Schedule Repair Section, Heavy Repair (Mechanical), Heavy Repair (Electrical), Bogie Section, Machine Shop and Training Centre.
Like all locomotive sheds, Pune does regular maintenance, overhaul and repair including painting and washing of locomotives. It not only attends to locomotives housed at Pune but to ones coming in from other sheds as well. It has four pit lines for loco repair.
Since March 2023, Pune Diesel Shed is also holding WAP-7 locomotives. The first 3 WAP-7 locos were transferred from Ajni Loco Shed. On 18th March 2023, first Pune based WAP-7 was attached in passenger link.
Pune shed was made home to 50 3-phase locomotives by start of July 2023 by transferring locomotives from Electric Loco Shed, Ajni, Electric Loco Shed, Kalyan and Electric Loco Shed, Bhusawal.
