Desh Pal S. Verma FRSC FTWAS is a plant cell and molecular biologist. Verma is presently at the Department of Molecular Genetics, Ohio State University, Columbus, USA where he has been for over 34 years and contributed to the overall development of biotechnology, cell biology and genetics area at this one of the largest academic institution in the World. He is a member of several interdisciplinary graduate programs including Molecular Cellular and Developmental Biology, Applied Plant Sciences and Biochemistry programs.

His early career started at the McGill University, Canada where he received National Research Council’s Stacie Award given by the Governor General of Canada for being the best young scientist is his field. He was later elected as the Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the member of the Canadian Academy of Sciences (1986). In 2003, he was inducted as a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (Italy).[1] He received in 1996 a Docteur Honoris Causa from the Universite de Picardie, France.

Prof. Verma has been a pioneer in the field of biotechnology starting from the isolation of first plant mRNA, cloning first plant gene, discovery of many new genes named as Nodulins including the one encoding Uricase which was later used by a biotechnology company to make a recombinant enzyme for the treatment of hyperuricemia. He has trained over 165 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists in his labs both in Canada and USA. His work led to the creation of several companies in Canada, India and USA and he is currently engaged with a biotechnology company in USA in developing Lectins as molecular tools to identify cancer biomarkers and building glycoGPT an AI based platform for glycobiology.

Prof. Verma has published over 220 research papers, edited 11 books and has been an international speaker for the last 50 years traveling around the globe. He has consulted with many international companies such as Monsanto, DuPont, Beyer, Matrix Labs and advised the Planning Commission of India in the area of agriculture biotechnology and showed how to add value to it’s bioresource.
