Department of Technical Education & Industrial Training is department under Government of Punjab, India that is responsible for managing and regulating technical education and vocational training across the state.

History

[edit]

The Department was restructured in 1977 to streamline technical and vocational training under a single administrative body. By bringing together the Technical Education Wing and the Industrial Training Wing, the department aimed to standardize educational policies and improve coordination across technical institutions and industrial training centers in the state.[8]

Structure

[edit]

The department consists of two main divisions:

Technical Education Wing: Oversees institutions offering diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs in disciplines including engineering, pharmacy, management, architecture, and hotel management.[9]

Industrial Training Wing: Administers vocational training programs in engineering and non-engineering trades through schemes such as the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS) and the Applied Training Scheme (ATS), catering to industry demand for skilled workers.[9]

Governing Institutions

[edit]

The Department of Technical Education and Industrial Training directly oversees key institutions in Punjab, including:

By legislation, both IKGPTU and MRSPTU have a permanent Vice-Chairman position and one Ex-officio Member on their Boards of Governors, held by the head of the Department of Technical Education and Industrial Training.[11][12]

In meetings, the Vice-Chairman has also acted as Chairman of the Board in the absence of the Chief Secretary of the Government of Punjab, who traditionally serves as Chairman. This arrangement supports continuity in leadership and decision-making within these universities.[13]

Additionally, the department manages admissions to IKGPTU, MRSPTU, ITIs, and polytechnic colleges across Punjab, providing a standardized and centralized admission process for technical and vocational education.[14][15]
