On February 5, 2023, Lisa Edwards died of a stroke while in the custody of the Knoxville Police Department in the US state of Tennessee. Edwards repeatedly told police that she had suffered a stroke and could not walk or breathe, but the officers believed she was lying. After repeated attempts to put Edwards in a police van, she was placed in the back of a patrol car. She was found unresponsive less than 20 minutes later.[1][2] Her daughter-in-law called the responding officers “negligent” and said that they “had no respect for human life”.[3]
