David Cornell

David Cornell is an English sculptor, coin designer and painter.

David Cornell was born in London[1] in 1935.[2] He studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London between 1950 and 1956, studying under Roger Hilton[3] and Philip Turner, and the Harrow School of Art from1965 to 1966. Cornell carried out further studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts[4]in 1968 studying anatomy under Robert Beverley Hale.[5]

Cornell was awarded a total of six Arts Council Awards in 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1966 and 1967 and was a judge in 1970[confirm "Goldsmiths Silversmiths"]. In 1965 he won a Royal Mint[6] national selection and was appointed coin and medal sculptor/engraver, a position he held until 1969. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Art in 1970, a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors[7] in 1971, and vice-president of the Society of Portrait Sculptors[8] in 1977. On July 2, 1982, Cornell was awarded the Diploma di Merito Universita delle Arti,[9] in Italy.

Among numerous official coins for the UK and various Commonwealth countries around the world, Cornell is known for designing the portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales £5 pound coin issued by the Royal Mint in 1999. [10] His other notable works include a 50p coin commemorating the 50th anniversary of the creation of the National Health Service issued by the Royal Mint in 1998[11] and the 50p coin for judo issued by the Royal Mint in celebration of the 2012 Summer Olympics.[12]

He was commissioned by the Crowborough Town Council in 1998 to sculpt a life-size bronze sculpture of the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which is situated in the public square in Crowborough, East Sussex, UK.[13]

In July 1978 and February 1979, Cornell collaborated with Marc Chagall in Saint-Paul de Vence, France on a peace medal based on one of Chagall's drawings, which was commissioned by Franklin Mint[Confirm exact name].
