Keziah Awosika
Dr. Keziah Awosika is a Nigerian economist and researcher specializing in monetary policy, macroeconomic issues, and development economics. She received her early education at St. Hilda’s and St. Anne’s Colleges and later earned a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford.
Dr. Awosika has contributed numerous articles to both local and international academic journals. She serves on the research committee of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and is a founding member and chapter president of the Association of African Women in Research and Development (AAWORD), a pan-African research organization established in 1977 and headquartered in Dakar, Senegal.
She played a significant role in developing Nigeria's National Policy for Women, serving as the focal point for women in development under the UNDP Fourth Country Programme. Her work included drafting initial programs and establishing a statistical support system. Dr. Awosika also participated in the NGO Forum during the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing.
Her consultancy work spans diverse areas, including preparing a study on ECOWAS financing for the African Development Bank, examining women's roles in trade and industry for a UNIFEM project, and collaborating with Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Education to implement a training program focused on girls' education using participatory learning approaches. She has also contributed to gender budgeting initiatives in partnership with the Centre for Democratic Studies.
Dr. Awosika is an advocate for women's rights and gender equality. She has been actively involved in campaigns for greater female participation in governance and democracy, as well as initiatives like the Gender and Constitution Reform Network (GECORN) and the National Affirmative Action Network. She chairs the Lagos State Gender Advocacy Team (LASGAT).
Currently, Dr. Awosika serves as the Coordinator and Director of the Women, Law, and Development Centre Nigeria (WLDCN), this is as seen on the WARDC website https://wardcnigeria.org/profile-of-dr-keziah-awosika/. This non-governmental, non-profit organization focuses on research, training, and advocacy related to socio-economic and legal issues, emphasizing gender perspectives. Its mission is to empower women to become agents of change in society.
On the issue of gender equality in Nigeria, Dr. Awosika has stated, "The whole world is moving towards equality; we are moving backwards, and I think we must do a lot to address this at every level, not only in terms of national appointments but also in terms of elections."
