DKAN is an open-source platform built on the Drupal content management system, designed for managing and publishing open data. It is inspired by the Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network (CKAN) and provides tools for the storage, publication, and management of datasets.[1]

History

[edit]

DKAN was first released on October 2, 2012, by NuCivic, the original maintainers of the platform.[2] In 2017, CivicActions took over stewardship from Granicus, aiming to foster continued development within the DKAN community.[3]

In 2020, DKAN underwent a significant rewrite to support Drupal 8, and it has since been updated to work with Drupal 9 and 10.

Features

[edit]

DKAN provides several features for managing and publishing open data:

  • Harvesting: Enables the collection of data from external catalogs that provide a data.json file.[4]
  • Metadata Management: Allows for the management of dataset metadata and associated resources.[5]
  • API Integration: Supports automated management of datasets through web service endpoints.[6]
  • Data Storage: Facilitates the storage and querying of CSV data files.[7]

Security

[edit]

DKAN follows best practices for securing open-source software, with regular updates and patches to address vulnerabilities. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later.[8]

Usage

[edit]

Various organizations and institutions utilize DKAN for their open data needs:

Components

[edit]

DKAN is structured around four primary data functions:

  • Data Management: Tools for creating, editing, and managing datasets and their metadata.[12]
  • Data Aggregation: Enables the collection and combination of data from multiple sources.[13]
  • Data Discoverability: Includes search and indexing features powered by Apache Solr.[14]
  • Data Usability: Offers tools like built-in data visualization and customizable dashboards.[15]

Comparison with CKAN

[edit]

DKAN provides functionalities similar to CKAN but is built on Drupal, allowing for greater modularity and customization.[16]
