DC Compact Comics
[edit]DC Compact Comics is a line published by DC Comics since 2024, reprinting comics previously printed in single issue format. The line features a 5.5" x 8.5" trim size while comics traditionally have a standard trim of 6 5/8" x 10 3/16”..[1] The line was announced November 2nd 2023 and the initial titles announced included: Batman: The Court of Owls, Watchmen, All-Star Superman, Far Sector, Batman: Hush, Wonder Woman: Earth One, Harley Quinn & the Gotham City Sirens, Joker, American Vampire Book One, and Catwoman: Trail of the Catwoman. [2]
The announcement was largely greeted positively in the comics community with SKTCHD's David Harper saying about the line that, "It’s honestly the best thing to come from one of the Big Two in I don’t even know how long."[3] and Gordon Jackson at Gizmodo noting that, "DC’s Compact Comics Line Is the Smartest Thing It’s Done in Years." [4] In Comicsbeat, Joe Grunenwald stressed that " the size, price and content are all suitable for mass market." [5]
After the release of the first ten titles, DC announced five more compact comics: Kingdom Come, Static: Season One, DCeased, Batwoman: Elegy, and Superman: Birthright[6] The collections have varied greatly length, but have shared a common price point of $9.99. To promote the line DC released a trailer which stressed the portable nature of the format and included the line "Comics on the Go" as well as the $9.99 cover price. [7]
