The game centers around an human named Robyn[2] (The name can be changed at the start of the game, Robyn being the default name) that recently moved in the seaside town of Longhope, filled with monsters and cryptids. His friend Atlas invited them to search an supposedly haunted radio station to look for clues about a curse that they're victim of.

Game design and game-play

[edit]

The game is formed as a visual novel containing board/role play elements.

Multiples events and elements in the game are affected by Random using the Rolling mechanics. (See Rolling)

Rolling

[edit]

"Rolling" using a dice, is a function in the game triggered by certain events like attacks in fights or an action by the player in the story. When the player have to roll, a window appears on the left of the screen containing 2 dices. When clicked, both dices changes to random values from 1-6. If the value is high enough (Greater than difficulty), the roll is considered as a "Success". In the other case, the roll is "Failed".

The result of a roll changes the end of an action in the story. (Ex: in a fight, if an enemy attacks and the roll is failed, the character aimed for the attack will take more damages. If the roll is a success, the character will dodge or take less damages than usual.)

Difficulty

[edit]

The difficulty of a roll is a value that has to be lower than the result of a roll to be considered as success. If the result of a roll is lower than the difficulty, the roll is considered as Failed. (Ex: If the difficulty is 10 and the player rolls a 8, since 10 is lower than 8 the roll is failed.)

The difficulty value depends on the context of the roll. Inside a fight, this value changes depending on the statistics of the characters and foes concerned. Outside a fight (In the story), the value changes depending on the kind of action the player have to roll for, meaning this value never changes in the story, unlike where in fights, statistics can change.

Karma

[edit]

The result of a roll can be changed by spending Karma. Karma is refilled by one unit when a roll is missed (Failed).

The number of time the player can roll again depends on the number of karma the player has. The maximum value of karma that the player can hold is usually around 3, but can differ depending on which dice the player equipped. (Some dices[3] have 1 maximum karma for example.)

Fights

[edit]

Turn based combats sometimes occurs in the story during specifics events. Theses fights (and other bonus combats) can be replayed later in the game when asking "Take me to the fights!" to the Mothman in the chapter selection.

They consist of having main characters in the player's team fighting against one or multiple opponent (foe). To do so, the player can select a character ability using the interface in the upper left corner of the screen before selecting the skill to be used and the target of the move.

Skills

[edit]

Skills are moves that can be used inside fights. They calls out a Roll and are separated in 4 categories:

  • Attacks (With 2 sub-categories) - Lowers the health points of a target.
  • Healing - Restore health points of the character targeted
  • Status effects - Adjust stats, Karma or difficulty of the target
  • Story - Used to make some events happen in the story

Each of the 3 first categories depends on the skill's Target and User stats, which are used to calculate the difficulty of the roll to use the skill. (See difficulty)

Health

[edit]

Foes and Allies needs to have their health points value (HP) greater than 0 to act. Health is loosed when the target of a move takes damages (Because of a skill or an event in the story). Character's health can be recovered using Healing skills.

When the health of a character is beneath 0, they need to be healed a greater number than the negative value to be able to act again. (Ex: If a character have -5 health, they need to be healed at least 6 to act again.)

If the Main character (Showing first in the skill list, usually Robyn) gets health beneath 0, the fight is loosed and the game ends, forcing the player to restart the fight or load a save file.

Stamina

[edit]

A character can only act when they have enough stamina (symbolized by the blue round icons on their stats). Stamina is a value always between -1 and 4. If the value reaches -1 (Every icon is gray), the character is exhausted and needs to gain at least 2 points of stamina to act again before the turn ends.

Every skill requires a certain amount of stamina between 1 and 5. When a character use the skill, the number of stamina needed is removed from them. If the number of stamina needed is 5, the character gets instantly exhausted after using the skill.

Stamina can be earned back each turn (one point) or by using certain skills.

The last update of the game that this pages recognize is the build from Dec 31, 2023.

Fan projects/Translations

[edit]

The game can be edited using Ren'py engine by extracting the file "gamefiles.rpa" and putting his content into a new folder "(Game folder)/game/Game Files". This will overwrite the files from the Rpa file and load the content from the "Game Files" folder instead. Thus, editing the files in this folder and launching the game with Ren'py editor will take effect.

Note: The game needs to be recompiled using Ren'py to make the editing take effect and the .exe/.sh files to work.
