Cory Corrine Haik is a prominent American media executive known for her expertise in digital storytelling and innovation within the journalism industry. She is currently the CEO of digital lifestyle publisher Refinery29 and over the years has held several leadership roles in major media organizations, where she has driven initiatives focused on digital transformation and audience engagement.
Early Life and Education
Haik was awarded a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from Nicholls State University in 2000, where she also freelanced for several regional newspapers including The Houma Courier and The Daily Comet. She was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters in 2018, being the second woman in the University's history to receive such. She was awarded a Masters of Arts in Communication Theory from The University of New Orleans in 2002
Early Career
Haik began her career in New Orleans, Louisiana at the now out-of-publication Metro daily, Times-Picayune’s NOLA.com. where she was the Managing Editor. During graduate school, Haik began working at NOLA.com part-time by hosting a live interview show from Bourbon Street.
In 2006, she shared in two Pulitzer Prizes with The Times-Picayune for staff coverage of Hurricane Katrina, each for Breaking news and Public service. Haik later served as Assistant managing editor for the Seattle Times’ digital newsroom, where she also shared in a staff Pulitzer in 2010 for the coverage of police officer shootings.
Advancement in Digital Media
In the early 2010s, Haik served as a digital executive editor at The Washington Post, focusing on integrating multimedia elements into storytelling and enhancing user engagement. Washingtonian named Haik as one of the most powerful women in Washington. She also was seen as a pioneer to digital storytelling formats, having stepped into lead Mic under co-founders Chris Altchek and Jake Horowitz. Haik then went on to serve as Chief Digital Officer and then later Chief Operating Officer of Vice Media Group, where she oversaw digital strategy, including editorial, product, technology and growth operations. Haik is now the CEO of Refinery29.
