Colossal Foundation is an American biotechnology organization, founded in October 2024 for US$50M, by Colossal Biosciences, a genetic engineering company known for his work on de-extinction technologies.[1]
The North Texas-based foundation aims to combat the extinction crisis with initiatives including Colossal Biovault, the world’s largest distributed biobanking initiative, and a host of new projects to preserve and de-extinct wildlife.[2][3]
Current projects
[edit]The foundation aims to develop and use advanced technologies to address the global extinction crisis. This includes:
- Species Conservation: Supporting initiatives to save endangered species like the vaquita, Smatran rhino, and Javan rhino.[2]
- Ecosystem Restoration: Employing technological solutions to restore damaged ecosystems and enhance biodiversity.
Science and development
[edit]The Colossal Foundation aims to achieve its goals through:
- Technological Innovation: Developing and deploying novel technologies, including gene editing and bioengineering, to combat extinction.[4]
- Partnerships: Collaborating with conservation organizations, research institutions, and local communities to implement effective conservation strategies.
- Rapid Action: Prioritizing swift and impactful interventions to prevent further species loss.
Activities and history
[edit]- Researchers at the University of Melbourne in partnership with the Colossal Foundation will advance conservation efforts to engineer immunity in amphibians, including Australia’s critically endangered Corroboree frog, against a deadly fungal disease.[5]
- Developing and deploying technological solutions: Investing in research and development of innovative technologies for conservation, such as gene editing for genetic rescue and advanced monitoring tools.
- The Colossal Biovault collects tissue samples of endangered species in hopes to allow cell lines to become accessible and stored in domestic partner facilities. Its first projects include: Sumatran rhinoceros, vaquita, and ivory-billed woodpecker.[2]
