The collapse-based design method is a novel approach to the seismic design of structures, introduced by Vahid Jaberi in December 2022 [1]. In this method, a maximum tolerable seismic load is applied to the structural model. After analysis, each main structural member is designed according to its maximum capacity. The analysis continues until the structure reaches its ultimate seismic capacity or collapses. This approach simplifies the design process, offers high reliability, and eliminates the need for many of the parameters, formulas, factors, and seismic provisions typically required in traditional seismic analysis and structural design. The method introduces a new technique for calculating the appropriate collapse seismic intensity for structures and establishes the median acceptable collapse spectral acceleration using a newly developed collapse spectrum. It then performs an incremental nonlinear time history analysis using artificial ground motion from the endurance time method until the target seismic intensity is reached. For the structural design, members are categorized into ductile and non-ductile types: ductile members are designed based on their ultimate plastic capacity, while non-ductile members are designed according to their maximum elastic capacity. The collapse-based seismic design method provides a straightforward and independent framework applicable to the analysis, design, evaluation, and retrofitting of structures, all based on uniform principles that can be similarly applied to structural systems.
