Clue is an upcoming American comedy mystery film based on the board game of the same name from Hasbro.
Production
[edit]It was announced in January 2018 that a new adaptation of the popular Hasbro board game was in development at 20th Century Fox, with Ryan Reynolds producing while Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick write the screenplay.[1] On September 25, 2019, Jason Bateman entered negotiations to direct the film.[2] Bateman would ultimately exit negotiations and on February 10, 2020, James Bobin entered talks to direct the film instead.[3] Bateman explained the reason he exited was that the scale of the production would not have allowed him to direct the film during his hiatus from his television series Ozark.[4]
On January 22, 2018, Reynolds was rumored to star in the film.[1] On January 13, 2019, Stephan James was in talks to co-star along with Reynolds.[5] On September 25, 2019, Jason Bateman was set to star in the film until he exited negotiations.[2][4]
In August 2021, Reynolds expressed uncertainty about the film, citing the merger between The Walt Disney Company and 20th Century Fox.[6] In August 2022, Oren Uziel was hired to re-write the screenplay.[7]
In April 2024, Sony Pictures acquired the film and television rights to the Clue franchise, the former under its TriStar Pictures label.[8]
