Class of ’09 is a visual novel released in June 10, 2021. Set in the late 2000s as the name implies, the game follows a sociopathic teenage girl named Nicole attending a high school. SBN3, the developer of the game, describes the game as an "anti-visual novel (...) a rejection sim rather than a dating sim" because it doesn't include typical visual novel progression.[1]
Gameplay
[edit]The player assumes the role of a self-identified sociopath and nihilist and drug addict named Nicole from the beginning of her junior year in September 2007 to her graduation in June 2009.
Nicole's associates throughout the game include:
- Her mother and brother.
- Her best friend Jecka(short for Jessica), who has similar problems to Nicole.
- Emily, who Nicole gets along with quite well, though not as well as Jecka.
- Kylar, whom Nicole usually manipulates.
- Jeffrey, who Nicole often ignores or bullies.
The game has 15 endings which vary between Nicole committing suicide, becoming homeless, dying in a school shooting, becoming a famous Youtuber or winning a $500,000 trial and so on. These endings can be achieved with the player making choices when a T-Mobile Sidekick shows up in certain story events, which contribute towards the ending. Once the player obtains all the endings, a bonus scene is unlocked in which Jeffery criticizes Nicole and Jecka for being "socially spoiled" and mean to everybody around them. [2] The game has very dark elements, relating to pedophilia, rape, sexual abuse, and murder.
Reception
[edit]In Metacritic, Class of '09 currently lacks reviews from official game critics.[3] The one and only review from a critic states that Class of '09 is a "very niche game" which one can "enjoy or won't be able to stand."[4]
