"Church" is a song by American country music singer Thomas Rhett, released on August 23, 2024 from his seventh studio album About a Woman. It was written by Rhett, Andy Albert, Jordan Minton and Mark Trussell, and it was produced by Trussell, Julian Bunetta and Dann Huff.
Background
[edit]Rhett is influenced by Eric Church, and the title track of Country Again: Side A includes a reference to Church. Rhett said he listened to Church's Carolina recordings to "exhaustion". Rhett also described Church's style as underground and outlaw, comparing him to Zach Bryan.[1] "Church" mentions Church's studio album Chief and his songs "Smoke a Little Smoke", "Love Your Love the Most", "Talladega", "Springsteen" and others.[2][3]
Content
[edit]The song was written about Rhett's idyllic early romance with his wife Lauren Akins.[4] The song was originally intended to be about a broken couple reflecting on their past relationship through Eric Church, but was finally rewritten by Rhett.[5][6]
Critical reception
[edit]Entertainment Focus writer James Daykin felt that it "pushes the boundaries of modern Country whilst helping to define them at the same time."[7]
