Christine H. Sophie Kabuye (born on the 21st November, 1938) is a botanist at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, Kampala.[1] [2] She is an administrator of the East African Hebarium and research program at Nairobi.[1] She was formerly a senior research scientist with the National Museum in Kenya[3]and president of the International society of Ethnobiology.[3]

She is a Baganda by tribe.[3] She pursued her BSc in botany and zoology at Makerere university, in 1964.[1]

Career and Contributions

Christine H. Sophie Kabuye is currently a part-time lecturer, department of botany, Makerere university since 2004.

  • From 1997-2004, she worked as a consultant on plant biodiversity, taxonomy, ethnobotany and indigenous knowledge.[2]

Legacy and Recognition

she is a member of the Call of the Earth Llamado De la Tierra network.[3]She is a plant collector with Natural History Museum (BM). she is also a taxonomic specialist, particularly Oxalidaceae and Graminea. she has undertaken numerous plant collection in East Africa, and is an authority in the indigenous use of plants. she was honored with the J.W. Harshberger medal and E.K. Janaki Ammal medal of the Society of Ethnobotanists, India in 1997 for her services to ethnobotany.[1]she is also a writer and has published several work including; code of conduct for use of indigenous knowledge (1998), and socio-economic research and non-wood forest products (1999) among many others. she is one of the authors for WCs Uganda publications , Wiley conservation science and practices journal: Identifying key Biodiversity areas and other sites of national importance in Uganda.[4]
