Christian’s Minde Settlement is within Jervis Bay Territory and is surrounded by Booderee National Park. The settlement is located on the eastern foreshore of Sussex Inlet, opposite the township of the same name.
Christians Minde Settlement comprises 6 blocks of land, which are owned by the Commonwealth Government of Australia and managed by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication and the Arts.

- Commonwealth Government owned and managed land (Block 13)

There is also a family cemetery associated with the Ellmoos family and Christian’s Minde which is located within Booderee National Park.[1]
Ellmoos family
[edit]The Ellmoos family migrated to Australia in the 1880s from the southern part of Denmark as result of the Second Schleswig War in 1864. Jacob Ellmoos arrived in Sydney in November 1882. A year later, he was joined by three siblings: his brothers Niels and Christian and their sister Marie.[2] The family were followed by their sister Wilhelmina in 1886, and their parents (Christian Snr and Louisa Snr) and four younger siblings (Louisa Jnr, Thomas, Anna and Lorenz) in 1887.[3]
Once settled at Sussex Inlet, the Ellmoos family made their living by fishing in nearby St Georges Basin. In 1888, an article appeared in the Shoalhaven Telegraph referring to "…an enterprising and hardy family of Swedes who have taken up a selection on the banks of stream".[4] A few months after this newspaper article was published, two of the brothers died: Niels went missing at sea[5], and Christian Jnr died from tuberculosis. Christian's Minde was named in memory of Christian Jnr who died, and his father Christian Snr, who built the family home.[6]
Christian's Minde guest house and holiday flats
[edit]In the late 1890s, the Ellmoos family established Christians Minde guest house, promoted as “...the first seaside holiday resort to be established between Port Hacking and the Victorian border”.[7] The guest house was frequented by prominent members of Sydney's professional community.[8]
The Commonwealth Government resumed Christian's Minde Settlement under the Jervis Bay Territory Acceptance Act 1915. Jacob Ellmoos purchased freehold land across the river at Sussex Inlet and built a guest house called Heimdall.[9] Christian's Minde (Block 14) continued as a guest house. The Commonwealth Government leased the buildings to Thomas and Jessie Ellmoos (Jacob's younger brother and sister in law), and the lease was later taken over by their son Niels and his wife Edna. After World War 2, the family converted the accommodation to holiday flats.[10] Family members continued to live at Christian's Minde (Block 14) until 2007, when the leasehold was sold for $1.4million. The original leaseholders were bankrupted and had to undersell in 2011, for $740,000.[11] The lease for Christian's Minde (Block 14) was sold for a third time on 15 July 2024 with an asking price of almost $3million.[12]
Heritage protection
[edit]Christian's Minde Settlement was registered by the National Trust (ACT) in 1980.
Christian's Minde Settlement was listed on the Register of the National Estate on 28 September 1982[13] and was placed on the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2004.[14]
The Commonwealth Government has commissioned at least two heritage reports for Christians Minde Settlement. Architectural firm Philip Cox, Richardson, Taylor and Partners, in association with Ken Taylor Landscape Architect, prepared a draft Conservation Management Plan for Christian’s Minde for the Office of ACT Administration Central Office in 1988. Heritage firm Godden Mackay Logan prepared Christian’s Minde Settlement Historic Heritage Management Plan for the Department and Regional Development in 2015.
