Abeysinghe Charith Wasantha Kumara (born November 27, 1982, in Horana, Sri Lanka as චරිත් අබේසිංහ) popular known as Charith Abeysinghe is an award-winning Sri Lankan tele-cinema director, producer, cinematographer, singer,[1] actor,[2] presenter,[3] and socio-political narrator.[4] Over a career spanning 25 years, Abeysinghe has made significant contributions to the arts, revolutionizing the tele-cinema industry while also using his platform to engage in socio-political discourse through his work. Known for his versatility, he has garnered critical acclaim and a fan base that spans generations.

Personal Life

Charith Abeysinghe was born in Horana, Sri Lanka, to Wasantha Premakumata Abeysinghe and Kuruppuarachchige Padmalatha. He attended 'Thakshila College', Horana, before pursuing higher education abroad.

He holds a BA (Hons) in Media and Communication from the University of Buckinghamshire[5] in the United Kingdom, a Master's in Media and Communication from the University of Monterrey, Mexico,[6] and a Diploma in Film Production from Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom. Currently, Abeysinghe is pursuing an LLB (UK) at the University of Buckinghamshire.

Charith Abeysinghe is married to Satharasinghe Archie Hanson Sithara, and the couple has triplets: Aveesha Abeysinghe, Thedeesha Abeysinghe, and Meleesha Abeysinghe.

Career

Charith Abesinghe began his artistic journey in Sri Lanka, initially establishing himself as a versatile performer with roles in music, television, and film. He gained early recognition in 2007 with the production of Juliya, a groundbreaking Sri Lankan film shot entirely in High Definition, making it one of the country's most expensive films. The movie was also the first Sri Lankan film to be completed at the renowned Pinewood Studios in London, elevating the standards of Sri Lankan cinema.

In addition to his work in cinema, Charith has contributed to several television dramas such as Wassanaye Hiru Avidin (2001), Sonduru Kadalla (2014) Chakra (2014) [7] , Prana (2016)[8],  Gemunu Maharaja (2017) , Yan (2019), Kumi (2019), Sathya (2020)[9], Thadee(2021), Number 09(2022), Chandi Kumarihami(2023)[10], Bambarek Awith (2024)[11], Take Care (2023), and Meemassa (2024) showcasing his skills both in front of and behind the camera. He directed and acted in the 2018 teledrama Mini Gandala, further expanding his footprint in the Sri Lankan entertainment industry.

His music career is equally notable,  where his hit song Sarath Sande[1]—the title track of the Julia movie—became a chart-breaking success. The song's popularity introduced him as a prominent singer[1], further demonstrating his ability to connect with the public across artistic mediums.

As a television presenter [3], Abeysinghe has made his mark as the charismatic host of the Sri Lankan edition of 5 Million Money Drop[3]. His engaging on-screen persona has helped make the show one of the most-watched programs in the country.

Charith's experimental approach and dedication to pushing creative boundaries have earned him accolades, including the 'Young Achiever of the Year' award at the 2007 Community Excellence Awards in the UK.

  • Thaadi, one of his most acclaimed projects, received 11 awards. This includes the Best Cinematographer Award at the 2023 SIGNIS Awards and the Popular Teledrama Award at the 2020 Sumathi Awards. The teledrama was widely recognized for its technical excellence and engaging storytelling.[12]
  • ·Minigandaala, another major success, garnered 10 awards. At the 2019 Sumathi Awards, it won both Best Actor and Best Actress, cementing Charith's reputation as a director who brings out stellar performances from his cast.[13]
  • ·The historical series Gamunu Maha Raja received 3 awards, including a Sumathi Award Nomination for Best Up-and-Coming Actor for Charith himself in 2018, showcasing his versatility both in front of and behind the camera.[14]

Charith was also named the Young Achiever of the Year at the 2007 Community Excellence Awards by the UK Lanka Times, and in 2014, he was nominated as Best Upcoming Actor at the Raigam Tele Awards. Singing Career

Charith Abesinghe's music career blossomed alongside his work in the film and television industry. His singing contributions include several popular tracks, many of which are tied to his cinematic projects. One of his most notable songs is Sarath Sande[1], the theme song from the movie Julia[2], which gained widespread recognition for its melodious composition and emotional depth. This song was performed in collaboration with fellow artist Bachi Susan.

Another significant track in Charith's musical portfolio is Bambarek Awith[11], the theme song for the film Bambarek Awith. Additionally, his songs Dehini[16]and Rangapaana Dadabbara Kello,[17] the theme song for July 7, also showcase his versatility and dedication to the Sri Lankan music scene.
