Centenary Action was established by British women's rights activist Professor Helen Pankhurst CBE, granddaughter of Sylvia Pankhurst and great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst, in 2018, to mark the centenary of the first women achieving the right to vote in the United Kingdom and to campaign for a gender-equal UK Parliament by 2028. [1] [2] The organisation is hosted by CARE International UK (registered as a charity with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, number 292506) which provides operational and administrative support.
Objectives
[edit]Central to Centenary Action's policies is a committment to eradicating barriers that prevent women from taking part in British politics and campaigning to improve women’s political participation. The organisation seeks to assist the development of governmental policies to combat violence, harassment and abuse that politically active women face; eliminate economic inequalities that prevent women from engaging in decision-making; and transform the culture and practices within UK politics that deter and exclude women. Uniting the women’s rights sector across political divides is a key aim for the organisation.
Advocacy
[edit]Since its inception the organisation has created a coalition of more than 100 activists, politicians and academics. A cross-party campaigning force, Centenary Action advocates the development, improvement and implementation of laws and policies that reduce and remove barriers to women’s participation in politics and governance.
In June 2024, Centenary Action launched an initiative to maximise the women’s vote in the UK General Election on 4 July. A pre-election poll of 500 women across the UK shared by the organisation suggested that 76% of women were planning to vote, 21% of women felt political parties only think about women’s issues for tactical gain, and 28% of women felt British political parties did not give due attention to the female vote. [3] After the election the organistion wrote to the newly elected UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to mark 40% of British MPs being women for the first time, following the Labour Party’s victory.
Governmental action
[edit]- Joint submission to the UK Government’s Disability Action Plan consultation, 2023. On 6 October 2023, Centenary Action, Disability Rights UK, Disability Policy Centre and Elect Her submitted a collective response to the government’s Disability Action Plan consultation.
Governance
[edit]Centenary Action’s Convenor is Helen Pankhurst. Its Steering Committee comprises: Alice Allan, Zainab Asunramu, Zaimal Azad, Rosie Campbell, Rhiannon Evans, Emma Holland-Lindsay, Dr Sarabajaya Kumar, Aanchal Mann, Victoria Rae, Neelam Rose, Rebecca Pilkington, Dorothy Sang and Yasmin Waljee OBE. The organisation’s two staff are Jo Gibbon (Campaigns Manager) and Liz Speight (Campaign Coordinator).
