Castle of St. George, Kephalonia
Early medieval and Late Medieval Castle located on the island of Cephalonia
Capital of the former country of the County Palatine of Cephalonia and Zakynthos
The Castle of St. George, was an Greek castle build in the Early medieval period somewhere in the late 12th century. It was the capital of the County Palatine of Cephalonia and Zakynthos from roughly 1201 to 1470. Nowadays the only things left of the Castle are the ruins of it. It became the capital of The Cephalonian and Zakynthos' lands after the Fourth Crusade. Because of the Partition of the Byzantine Empire after the Fourth Crusade, the Crusaders had to partion the Byzantine Empire, into the Kingdom of Thessalonica, (Vassal of the Latin Empire) Duchy of Athens, Principality of Achaea and the Duchy of the Archipelago, together with the County Palatine of Cephalonia and Zakynthos. It was a Vassal/"Colony" of the Kingdom of Sicily in its whole existence from 1185 to 1479, but it had a certain autonomy as County Palatine. The Zakynthos and Cephalonia's lands were given by the Norman king of Southern Italy, William II of Sicily to Margaritus of Brindisi in 1185.
