Draft:California Association of Student Leaders

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The California Association of Student Leaders is student-led, not-for-profit organization that provides a statewide network, facilitating the development of ethical, responsible, and servant leaders. CASL’s initiative is to equip and empower students to be effective future leaders of the world through local, regional, and statewide conferences.

Overview

[edit]

CASL works in partnership with the California Association of Directors of Activities (CADA). In 1994, the National Association of Student Councils (NatStuCo) saw a need for a board of student leaders in the state of California and reached out to CADA to lead this initiative. In 1996, CASL hosted their first State Conference in Visalia, California, with the first official Board of Student Directors being elected there. Since then, CASL and CADA have supported each other in their shared mission to develop student leaders in schools around California and beyond.

Structure

[edit]

State Board

[edit]

The CASL State Board consists of 24 elected board members ranging from 9th - 12th grade, along with 4 adult advisors. There are 7 Northern Regional Directors from grades 10-12 representing Northern California, 7 Southern Regional Directors from grades 10-12 representing Southern California, 2 Freshman Directors (elected as 8th graders), an Outreach Director, Director of Operations, and CASL State President.

Each board member is elected to serve for a board term of one year, starting the subsequent school year. Regional and Freshmen Directors go through a rigorous process of submitting an application to run for the board, with a Senior Selection Committee consisting of Senior CASL Board Members and adults selecting a finalist list of 10 Northern Regional, 10 Southern Regional Directors, 4 Freshman Directors, and 5-7 Media Directors. Regional and Freshman Directors are then elected by 2000+ students at the State Conference, with Media Directors being appointed by a Senior Media selection committee.

Regional Areas

[edit]

California is split into 7 Areas, A-G, each representing a geographical region of the state. Delegations from outside of California are referred to as Area H.
