Cali Quail is an American advertising icon for California State Parks. Named after the hardy and adaptable California state bird, the California quail (Callipepla californica), Cali Quail was first designed for several promotional advertising programs encouraging children to visit their state parks in California. [1]

History

[edit]

Cali Quail was first introduced in 1985 for a joint collaboration between California State Parks, POST Cereal, and Pacific Bell.[1] POST Cereal used Cali Quail to promote their cereals by offering free state park entry or a Cali Quail stuffed doll for sending in box tops from selected cereals through their "POP into a Park" program in 1985.[2]

Cali Quail also promoted several other projects including Kids Can Do It All, Reading Rewards, Rangers to the Rescue, and a creative writing contest for fourth to sixth grade school kids who could win Coleman products.[3] The creative writing contest encouraged children to pretend they were the California quail, flying above a state park, and to write about what they see.[3]
