Synopsis
[edit]Takamine Kousei, a college student, dies under unfortunate circumstances but wakes up that same morning, experiencing a strange sense of déjà vu and recalling the events after his death.[5][6] Returning to the accident scene, he meets Akizuki Kanna, a reaper or shinigami, and a talking cat or cat sidhe named Mikado Takanori. They reveal that for him to continue living, Kousei must assist them with supernatural tasks and become involved in starting a café, Café Stella.
Kousei's journey involves helping the café alongside Kanna and interacting with a diverse group of characters, each with their story arcs and challenges that reflect Kousei's struggles. Themes of fate, life after death, and second chances are explored as Kousei attempts to defy the consequences of his accident while building new relationships.[5][10] The game is also an example of how romantic adventure games transform traditional notions of romantic love through unique narrative forms.[7]
Gameplay
[edit]Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies is a traditional visual novel featuring branching storylines influenced by player choices. Visual novels as a genre are characterized by their narrative focus, branching storylines, and player agency, which are evident in this game's multiple perspectives, endings, and romantic outcomes.[11][12] The gameplay primarily involves reading dialogue and making choices that shape the story's progression.[10][13]Visual elements, especially character design and art style, are a major attraction in visual novels, including this one.[14]

Development and Release
[edit]The game was developed by Yuzusoft, which is known for its character-driven visual novels.[1][15] Amamiya Ritsu, Kazuki Fumi, and Seo Jun wrote the scenario. Kobuichi and Muririn provided the original character designs, with additional SD art by Komowata Haruka. The visual design aligns with broader trends in the visual novel industry, where character design and aesthetics are key elements that drive player engagement.[14]
Yuzusoft officially announced the game on August 30, 2019, via a tweet, revealing its release date of December 20, 2019, with pre-orders starting the same day.[16][17][18] An article from Moedigi provided further details about the announcement, including character information and an overview of the game's plot. The game was released digitally on platforms like Steam, GOG, and JAST USA, featuring cloud saves and achievements. It gained notable attention for its high-quality art and voice acting, which led to a two-volume manga adaptation serialized in Monthly Comic Alive.[19][20]
Characters
[edit]- Takamine Kousei: The protagonist is a university student who receives a second chance at life after a fatal accident. His journey involves navigating the supernatural and balancing responsibilities at the café.
- Akizuki Kanna: A reaper, or goddess of death (shinigami) over 100 years old. Although playful and mischievous, she reveals her struggles regarding death, reincarnation, and purpose. She works closely with Kousei to collect butterflies—representing souls—and run the café.
- Mikado Takanori: A talking cat who can transform into a human form. He works as Kanna's assistant and contributes to the café's operations, often providing comic relief.
- Shiki Natsume: A classmate of Kousei, Shiki Natsume is known for her beauty and aloof demeanor. She plays a crucial role in establishing the café and has a complicated personal history involving illness and self-discovery.
- Sumizome Nozomi: A childhood friend of Kousei who often helps with daily chores and has close ties to him due to family connections. She also assists with tasks at the café and is loyal to Kousei.
- Hiuchidani Mei: A spirited girl who works in the café. She is energetic and takes on tasks enthusiastically, adding comic relief to the narrative.
- Shioyama Suzune: An older pâtissière who works at the café. She is candid and takes her work very seriously, often clashing with others over her dedication to making perfect sweets.
Reception and Community Opinions
[edit]Upon release, Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies was praised for its character designs, engaging storylines, and romantic routes.[5][6][10][21] It received high ratings on platforms like Steam and GOG, and was noted for its visual appeal and narrative quality. The game's character-driven narrative, a common feature of visual novels, offers players an immersive experience through complex storylines and relationships.
Despite this, community opinions were mixed regarding the game's pacing.[10][22] Some users found the focus on café scenes excessive, while others argued these scenes were essential for character integration. Reviews from Fuwanovel and Noisy Pixel praised the character diversity and humor, though the overuse of slice-of-life content and underdeveloped supernatural elements were noted as drawbacks. The appeal of character diversity in visual novels also aligns with the broader cultural significance of these games in representing various identities and relationships, which is an ongoing point of interest in academic research.[23]
Controversy
[edit]In November 2019, Kobe Shimbun reported that the exterior design of Pâtissier S. Koyama, a well-known confectionery shop in Hyogo Prefecture, had been used without permission in the visual novel Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies.[24] The developers argued that no copyright infringement occurred, as they had altered the stone wall color and removed the store's logo. Nevertheless, the shop expressed concerns about its association with the game's adult themes and considered further action.
Following public backlash, Yuzusoft quickly replaced the background images. NetLab reported the developer's apology and revision plans, which did not affect the game's release schedule.[25] The incident prompted fan debate about the ethics of using real-world locations in adult-themed games without permission.
Localization
[edit]Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies was localized for English-speaking audiences by NekoNyan Ltd., a company known for translating Japanese visual novels. Localization processes for visual novels often have to capture cultural nuances and humor, which are core to the player experience.[26] Despite some minor issues, reviewers praised the localization for effectively capturing the original humor and personality of the game, making it accessible to both long-time visual novel fans and newcomers.[2][3][10]
Awards
[edit]Upon its release, Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies received multiple awards in Japan, particularly for its outstanding art and music. This further established Yuzusoft's reputation in the visual novel genre. The game has become a notable entry in the studio's catalog and has contributed to the studio's continued success in the industry.[27][28] The cultural impact of bishōjo games, such as Café Stella, extends beyond entertainment, offering insights into Japanese cultural and ideological systems, making them a topic of interest for academic study.[26]
Availability
[edit]Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies is available on multiple platforms, including Steam and GOG.com.[29][8] The Steam version features additional capabilities such as achievements and cloud saves. In contrast, the GOG version offers a DRM-free experience, particularly appealing to users who prefer offline play and digital content ownership. Both versions have attracted a dedicated following and continue to garner positive reviews for their narrative depth and visual appeal.
Content Warnings
[edit]The game contains mature themes and adult content, including illustrations with partial nudity and references to sexual relationships. While explicit scenes are veiled, the game is recommended for players aged 18 and older. The storyline also touches on topics such as death, reincarnation, and fate, which may not be suitable for all audiences.
Manga Adaptation
[edit]A two-volume manga adaptation was serialized in Monthly Comic Alive from March 2020 to April 2021. The manga, titled the same as the game, visually represents the main storyline, focusing on crucial plot events and romantic arcs.[19][20]
