The Byzantine-Kutrigurs war lasted about a year from January 1st, 558 to March 1st, 559[1]. Before the famous batte of Melantias, saw the battle by the Anastasian Wall where Zabergan fought Emperor Justinian I's Imperial guard and other troops led by Patricius Sergius where Zabergan saw a major victory against the Byzantines even executing the commander Sergius. After this, The emperor Justinian brought the famed General, Flavius Belisarius out of retirement. The Battle of Melantias saw Byzantine General, Belisarius fight his last battle and defeat the Kutrigur Bulgars, an army led by Zabergan ending his invasion of the Empire.[2] In the aftermath of the battle, Zabergan and his Slavic allies retreated north of the Danube and the war had been won by the Byzantine Empire.
