The Burkina Faso national cricket team represents Burkina Faso in international cricket matches. Established relatively recently, the team is working towards gaining recognition and establishing a stronger presence in the sport within a country where football overwhelmingly dominates the sports scene.[1]
History
[edit]Cricket in Burkina Faso began to take root in the early 21st century, largely through the efforts of expatriates, particularly from India, who introduced the game to local communities. The sport's growth has been slow but steady, with the first organized clubs emerging in the capital, Ouagadougou.
The Burkina Faso Cricket Association, known as Cricket Burkina Faso (CBF), was formed to oversee the development of cricket within the country. CBF has been instrumental in organizing local matches, player development, and in seeking international recognition from bodies like the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Development and Structure
[edit]As of the latest reports, there are approximately 10 cricket clubs in Burkina Faso, mostly concentrated in Ouagadougou, with around 68 regular participants and an estimated 225 players involved in the sport. The association has been pushing for cricket to become one of the top 10 sports in Burkina Faso by 2026, focusing on grassroots development, school programs, and social media campaigns to raise awareness.
Due to the limited availability of cricket equipment, players often have to improvise, making their own bats and wickets. The lack of proper equipment and facilities remains a significant hurdle. Cricket competes with football, the country's national sport, for attention and resources. This has not deterred the enthusiasm for the sport but underscores the challenges in its early development phase.
Domestic cricket in Burkina Faso consists mainly of club matches within Ouagadougou, where the sport has the most followers. These games serve as both entertainment and a means to spread interest in cricket across different age groups. There is no formal league structure yet, but efforts are underway to establish one.
International participation
[edit]Burkina Faso's cricket team has not yet participated in major international tournaments like the ICC World Cup or the Africa T20 Cup due to its non-affiliate status with the ICC. However, there have been efforts to engage with other cricket-playing nations in Africa, notably with Côte d'Ivoire, for friendly matches and development initiatives.
Burkina Faso aims to achieve ICC Associate Membership, which would grant them access to more resources, coaching, and opportunities to play in regional and international tournaments. The team has organized and participated in friendly matches within the country and with neighboring nations to gain experience and exposure.
