The British Horse Council (or BHC) was created in 2018 as a Community Interest Company or CIC.[1] It replaced the British Horse Industry Confederation and the Equine Sector Council for Health & Welfare. The Council was created to represent all parts of the equine industry and where there is consensus, to speak with Government and similar bodies.

2019 General Election

[edit]

In 2019, the BHC issued a manifesto calling for Government support for an industry worth £8 billion to the UK economy.[2]

2024 General Election

[edit]

In 2024, the BHC put out a manifesto for the General Election, describing the horse industry in terms of its size, breadth, value and profile. The manifesto went on to describe how Government could help the £9 billion industry to flourish.[3][4]

Consultation

[edit]

The British Horse Council helped Defra collect views on the future of horse passports in 2022.[5] The council collected views on the importation of horses from the EU in 2024.[6]
