BoulderLight Pictures is a film production company founded in 2012 by J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules. BoulderLight is responsible for 22 films since its inception. As of 2023, BoulderLight Pictures entered a first-look deal with New Line Cinema. As of 2024, they inked a first-look deal with A+E Studios also marking their first foray into television.  

Film

BoulderLight Pictures released the horror film Contracted in 2013. This was a major hit for IFC Midnight, garnering a limited theatrical release, before going on to be the most streamed film on Netflix. A sequel, Contracted: Phase II was pre-sold to IFC and was released in Fall 2015. Over the following years, BoulderLight continued to grow its production arm with Dismissed, Bad Match, and New York Times Critics’ Pick Dementia.

Their fraternity horror film Pledge premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival and was released by IFC Midnight in January 2019.

The Vigil premiered at the Midnight Madness program of TIFF 2019 and acquired a 7-figure deal as well as having its US premiere at SXSW 2020.

Action thriller Becky, starring Kevin James, Lulu Wilson, and Joel McHale, was selected to premiere at Tribeca 2020 and was released to commercial and critical success. The film follows a rebellious teen who fights back when a group of criminals invades her family's cabin.

Wild Indian, from indigenous filmmaker Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr/ starring Kate Bosworth, Jesse Eisenberg, and Michael Greyeyes, premiered in dramatic competition at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for four Spirit Awards.

They released the SXSW pic, Gone in the Night with Winona Ryder starring as Kath. Ryder searches for her missing boyfriend, Max, who disappears with a mysterious couple at a remote cabin.

Becky 2: The Wrath of Becky was the 2023 sequel that follows the titular Becky as she takes revenge on the extremist group, who kidnap her dog. With dark humor and creative action, she outsmarts her enemies and ends up being recruited by the CIA.

BoulderLight’s 2022 film Barbarian starring Bill Skarsgard, Justin Long, Georgina Campbell, and Kate Bosworth made waves, and currently boasts a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Described as a “gleefully twisty horror” by the New York Times and a “ratchet new horror classic” by Variety, the film was seen as part of a new wave of horror and prompted think pieces from The Atlantic and Rolling Stone. Barbarian reached #1 at the domestic box office on its opening weekend with $10.5 million (more than double its production budget of $4.5 million) and ultimately took in more than $45 million worldwide.

In 2024, BoulderLight released Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, for Netflix. Based on a true story, the 1970’s period drama follows an aspiring actress who comes face to face with a serial killer when they’re both cast on an episode of The Dating Game.

In 2025, BoulderLight will release Companion for Warner Bros on January 31, 2025. The ensemble includes Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Harvey Guillén, and Megan Suri.

Coming soon will also be FRIENDSHIP starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, which debuted at TIFF’s Midnight Madness program and quickly sold to A24. And further on the horizon, it was recently announced that they will re-team with Barbarian director Zach Cregger to release WEAPONS at New Line.
