Bopea, a portmanteau of Bohemian Peasantry, defines a contemporary socio-economic group succeeding the Sloane Rangers, Bobos, and hipsters.[1] The term characterizes an emerging group of individuals blending bohemian values of creativity and non-conformism with a more traditional "neo-peasant" worldview that values nature, community, and craft.[2]
The term was introduced by British society magazine Tatler in 2023 to characterize the rapid re-emergence of various traditional practices and hobbies post the COVID lockdowns.[3]
Writing in The Sunday Times, Phoebe Luckhurst explains that Bopeas have a variety of hobbies:
"Their place is in the greenhouse, the workshop, the kitchen garden or the apiary; their hobbies are – in no particular order – rewilding, keeping chickens, farm-to-table cooking, knitting, fermenting and cold water swimming."[4]
Tatler identified King Charles III as key figure inspiration for the group. The magazine also identified James Middleton, Merlin Sheldrake, and Ben Goldsmith as leading figures in the cultural movement. Politico also highlighted Carrie Johnson — the wife of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson — as "the nation's Bopea tradwife."[5]
