Blacksheep TV (பிளாக்ஷீப்) is an Indian Tamil-language general entertainment channel owned by RJ Vigneshkanth on 15 January 2023 replacing Chithiram TV.[1] It telecasts Game shows, Talk shows, Tamil Films and comedy shows. It is also available through digital entertainment platform BS Value.
History
[edit]It was launched on 15 January 2023 which started on the Tamil Pongal Festival. The channel is owned by RJ Vigneshkanth, is a homegrown regional Over-the-top media service[2] brand 'BlackSheep'[2][3] launched 'Blacksheep TV' satellite channel after success with multiple YouTube[2][4] channels, its own dedicated platforms and several original shows and productions.[2]
The channel was announced in October 2022, with the Tamil comedy icon Vadivelu[5] as its ambassador, originally scheduled to be Test launched on 6 November[6] but delayed to 12 December and official launched on 15 January 2023 and was rebranded from Chithiram TV. The slogan is 'எல்லாருக்கும் நல்லாருக்கும்!!; Ellarukkum Nallarukkum!!' (Good for everyone).[citation needed]
Controversy
[edit]In February 2024, Black Sheep TV and its director, Vigneshkanth, came under scrutiny following a summons by the Directorate of GST Investigation over alleged tax irregularities. Reports indicated discrepancies in the channel's GST filings, particularly concerning the purchase of broadcasting equipment. GST officials conducted a raid on the Black Sheep TV offices, as well as on Kadir Network, another entity managed by Vigneshkanth, uncovering evidence that suggested potential tax evasion. While officials seized several documents during the search, they withheld details on the alleged tax amount involved.[7]
Additionally, reports emerged suggesting that Black Sheep TV, which began as a YouTube channel before transitioning into a satellite broadcast in early 2024, had received bandwidth support from Udhayanidhi Stalin. The bandwidth had initially been intended for Chitiram TV, an affiliate of Kalaignar TV. The appointment of close relatives of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin’s wife, Durga Stalin, as board members also raised questions about political influence over the channel’s management. The controversy has sparked public and media interest, as GST officials continue to investigate the financial practices of Black Sheep TV and its associated entities.[7]
