Draft:Blacksburg Branch

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Blacksburg Branch was originally used by the Virginia Anthracite Coal & Railway Company in 1902. The company mined anthracite coal from mines at Merrimac as well as providing rail service for Blacksburg. Norfolk and Western eventually purchased the railroad in 1911 and officially took ownership in January 1912. The line was operated under the name "Blacksburg Branch" eventually being partially abandoned in the 1960's.

Modern Use

[edit]

The Blacksburg Branch is used occasionally by Norfolk And Southern however, most of the track is abandoned (5.17 miles). The track was proposed as a location for a new Amtrak Station but the location was scrapped.
