After having his life savings stolen, an elderly rancher starts robbing banks and hunting down the thieves while being pursued by his son, the sheriff.

Production

[edit]

In 2008, Michael Gilio's script for the film, originally titled Big Hole, appeared on the Black List, an annual survey of the "most-liked" screenplays yet to be produced.[1] In October 2011, Annapurna Pictures acquired the screenplay, now titled Bitterroot, with Gore Verbinski and Jonathan Krauss set to produce under their Blind Wink banner alongside Scott Aversano for Aversano Films, and music video director Chris Milk on board to make his feature directorial debut. Verbinski initially intended to direct the film for Universal Pictures but chose to make The Lone Ranger (2013) instead.[2]

In November 2020, David Fincher signed a four-year deal with Netflix.[3] His projects for the streamer include Mindhunter (2017–2019), Mank (2020), and The Killer (2023). In September 2024, Fincher became attached to direct Bitterroot.[4]
